He was followed by Bobby Bonilla , Cal Ripken Jr. , Chris Hoiles , Roberto Alomar , and B.J. There was a big jump between there and the next-closest hitter. Eddie Murray was the eighth and final Oriole to slug double-digit homers, and he hit 10. His 2010 performance was reinforced by both a strong start and finish.

Joe and Luke Sewell were both with the Indians from 1921 to1930. Luke was a good catcher, but was weak at bat, hitting only .259 in a period when batting averages were quite high. In the meantime, Joe, with wonderful bat control, was compiling a lifetime average of .312 while playing short and third. As noted above, the Foreman brothers were together on the Cincinnati team in 1896. However, at the start of the season, John Foreman pitched briefly for Pittsburgh.
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Yankees
Ruth set the Major League Baseball single-season home run record four times, first at 29 , then 54 , 59 , and finally 60 . Ruth's 1920 and 1921 seasons are tied for the widest margin of victory for a home run champion as he topped the next highest total by 35 home runs in each season. Maris' mark was broken 37 years later by both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa during the 1998 home run record chase, with McGwire ultimately setting a new record of 70. Barry Bonds, who also has the most career home runs, then broke that mark, setting the current single season record of 73 in 2001.

Jim Galvin pitched 639 complete games and his brother Lou, up briefly with St. Paul in the Union Association in 1884, had three for a combined total of 642. Here are the records for the most noteworthy and balanced of the brother pitching combos, with statistics on active hurlers through the 1978 season. An asterisk indicates season leadership in the specific category.

Three times they hit home runs in the same game - twice in the same inning. The last time, on September 15, 1938, they clipped Cliff Melton of the Giants for back-to-back homers in the fifth inning at the Polo Grounds. Cody Bellinger’s NL MVP performance included a team-leading 47 home runs. It was also one of the most powerful seasons in franchise history. Joc Pederson , Max Muncy , and Justin Turner were the only other Dodger hitters to hit at least 20 dingers. Manager Dave Roberts did watch 11 different batters collect at least 11 homers, though.
His 58 home runs in 1997 led neither league due to a mid-season trade which split this total across 2 leagues. The first home run champion in the National League was George Hall. In the league's inaugural 1876 season, Hall hit five home runs for the short-lived National League Philadelphia Athletics. In 1901, the American League was established and Hall of Fame second baseman Nap Lajoie led it with 14 home runs for the American League Philadelphia Athletics. Over the course of his 22-season career, Babe Ruth led the American League in home runs twelve times.
Other major leagues
Busch Memorial Stadium was home to the St. Louis Cardinals from 1966 to 2005. Hank and Tommie Aaron hold the record for most home runs by a brother combination -- of any size -- with 769. On September 4, 1916 in the first game of a Labor Day doubleheader, Stan Coveleski started for Cleveland, but was bombed out in 2/3 of an inning by Detroit. In the seventh the Tigers brought in Harry Coveleski, who also pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up no runs.

The Coveleski boys never wanted to face each other and that was the closest they came to confrontation. It is hard to imagine a higher level of attainment for two brothers than that. Pederson also enjoyed the friendly confines of Chavez Ravine. The outfielder slugged 24 of his 36 dingers in front of the home crowd. He was followed by George Springer , Jose Altuve , Yuli Gurriel , Yordan Alvarez , Michael Brantley , and Carlos Correa . Rookie Joe DiMaggio, center, hugs his brothers Vince, left, and Dom, before the start of the 1936 World Series.
Roger Maris, 1961: 61 Home Runs
It was his second of four in a row where he posted at least 5.9 before serving in World War II. He stayed healthy enough to clobber baseballs for an entire season, and he was rewarded with the NL MVP award. This was notable because while he also led baseball with 132 RBI, he posted a league-leading (and career-best) .631 slugging percentage with a 23.6% strikeout rate. What really made this season special for Stanton was his August rampage.
While we are on that subject, we should note that the Committee also has come up with enough demographic data to show that Chick Stahl and Jake Stahl were NOT brothers. Since 1876 there have been more than 275 brother combinations as players. There has been one family group of five players - the Delahantys; one of four – the O'Neills; 13 of three members; and the remainder of two.
Little Poison (5-9, 150 pounds) was Lloyd, who played most of his 18-year career in Pittsburgh and had 2,459 hits and a .316 career average. Aaron Judge has put together possibly one of the most dominant contract years ever, and it’s been one of the most powerful displays we’ve seen in quite a while. The last time someone hit this many homers in a season, it was Judge’s teammate, Giancarlo Stanton, in 2017 when he hit 59 dingers.

When Mickey Mantle retired after the 1968 season, he was third on the all time list for Home runs with 536 behind Babe Ruth 714, and Willie Mays 583. Babe Ruth is third on the all time career home run list with 714. Dom, Vince and Joe DiMaggio totaled 573 home runs, and Jose and Ozzie Canseco have 462; Ozzie didn't hit any. The only two brothers to win batting titles were Dixie Walker, who hit .357 with the Dodgers in 1944, and Harry, who hit .363 with the Cards and Phils in 1947. Similarly, the only brothers to win RBI titles were Emil Meusel with the New York Giants in 1923, and Bob with the New York Yankees in 1925. The Perry brothers faced each other only once, on July 3, 1973, when Jim was with the Tigers and Gaylord with the Indians.
The Ewings also might have developed into a good battery, but pitcher John hurt his arm in 1891 while leading the NL with a 21-8 won-lost record. The 2022 Yankees had a great foundation for making this list thanks to Aaron Judge’s American League record 62 dingers. The closest players to Judge were Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton, who hit 32 and 31 homers, respectively. Gleyber Torres was the only other Yankees hitter with 20-plus homers.
